Realize Taxes as a Source of State Revenue

Today, of course, we know that the economy is one of the most influential factors in the lives of human beings. In the face of a deteriorating global economy, Indonesia's economy remains strong. Indonesia's economic growth in the first quarter of 2023 was recorded at 5.03%, according to data from the Central Agency on Statistics (BPS). It is believed that the economic growth of Indonesia will continue to grow in a positive manner and will experience a surge in the next few years. This is a good result in comparison with the previous results.

The economy of Indonesia has not always been on a good path. There are a lot of economic problems that arise, one of which is the macro economy. Macroeconomics is the branch of economics concerned with the structure, performance, behavior, and decision-making of the entire economy. Macroeconomics seeks to measure how well an economy is performing, to understand the forces driving it, and to project how it can continue to perform. Long-term economic growth and shorter-term business cycles are the two main areas of macroeconomic research.

Macroeconomic problems include inflation, unemployment, economic growth, balance of payments and instability. Inflation is a macroeconomic term that affects economic growth, purchasing power, and the willingness of individuals to spend. Fiscal policies such as cutting government spending, increasing tax rates, and borrowing can be used by the government to tackle the problem of inflation. Unemployment, which leads to other social problems, is one of the macroeconomic problems that hamper regional development. Government policy must take concrete steps to overcome unemployment by creating jobs, changing the investment climate, providing economic incentives, and improving human resource quality in education.

Moreover, economic growth is included in macroeconomic problems. These include controlling population growth, increasing appropriate technology, and increasing production of goods and services. In addition, there is a balance of payments that we must stabilize and maintain by keeping the value of exports and imports in balance, limiting imports of commodities and increasing exports of commodities. this way is a fairly effective way to overcome the balance of payments deficit. And the last is economic instability, how to overcome it by increasing the production of goods and services, increasing the level of public consumption, and ensuring the availability of natural and human resources to increase the production of goods and services.

To overcome the macro and other economic issues, the tax system is the appropriate and effective measure to maintain the stability of the Indonesian economy. Based on the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 28 of 2007, tax is a mandatory contribution to the state owed by individuals or legal entities, which is compulsory based on the law, without direct reward and used for state purposes for the greatest prosperity of the people. Taxes play a crucial role as a source of state revenue in countries around the world. Governments levy taxes on individuals, businesses, and various economic activities to generate income to fund public expenditures and provide essential services to citizens. Taxes are an important source of revenue for state governments because they provide a stable and predictable source of income. Taxes can also be used to influence the behavior of individuals and businesses. For example, a state may increase its sales tax on sugary drinks to discourage people from drinking them.

However, taxes can also be unpopular with taxpayers. Some people believe that taxes are too high, while others believe that the tax system is unfair. State governments need to balance the need for revenue with the need to keep taxpayers satisfied. Here are some of the benefits of using taxes as a source of state revenue: 1) Taxes are a stable and predictable source of income. This is because taxes are typically collected on a regular basis, such as monthly or quarterly. This makes it easier for state governments to budget and plan for the future. 2) Taxes can be used to influence the behavior of individuals and businesses. For example, a state may increase its sales tax on sugary drinks in order to discourage people from drinking them. 3) Taxes can help to redistribute wealth. This is because taxes can be used to fund programs that benefit low-income people, such as education and healthcare.

Some of the challenges of using taxes as a source of government revenue are as follows: Tax can be difficult to collect. This is because some people may try to evade taxes by not reporting their income or by claiming deductions that they are not entitled to and the last but not least, taxes can have a negative impact on the economy. This is because taxes can discourage investment and economic growth. Overall, the impact of taxes on economic stability depends on a number of factors, including the design of the tax system, the state of the economy, and the government's fiscal policy. However, in general, taxes can play a positive role in promoting economic stability by smoothing out economic cycles, stabilizing prices, and redistributing income. Governments need to carefully consider the benefits and challenges of taxes before making decisions about how to raise revenue.
